We recently wrapped up a complete store fit-out for an independent IGA supermarket in Australia. The store owners understood a fundamental retail truth: walking into a local grocer shouldn't feel like navigating a cold warehouse.
They needed a space that could handle massive weekly grocery loads while creating an inviting, warm atmosphere for daily coffee and fresh food shoppers. Here is how our team engineered and delivered a complete store ecosystem that shapes how customers move, shop, and feel.
The Challenge: Balancing Bulk Storage with Premium Experience
The main hurdle for any independent Australian grocer is space utilization. Cramming heavy stock like multi-pack sodas and giant laundry tubs onto the shop floor usually kills the local grocer vibe. But you still need that bulk capacity. The trick is hiding industrial-grade strength behind a clean retail finish.
Then there are the profit centers: bakery and fresh produce. If you put fresh bread on a standard metal rack, it feels cheap. Those areas demand a custom look that actually stops shoppers in their tracks so they stick around and buy more. Supplying just one type of standard metal rack across the whole store was never going to work.

We stepped away from simply fitting fixtures into a space and focused on manufacturing a mix of heavy-duty steel and custom joinery to suit different shopping behaviors.
Heavy-Duty Australian-Style Shelving
For the main grocery runs, we deployed our robust Australian-style gondola systems.
Take a look at the beverage and household aisles. Standard racking bends under that kind of pressure. We set up reinforced uprights matched with heavy-duty wire decking, so loading up cases of liquid detergent is never an issue.
For the fiddly stuff—like kitchenware and loose sponges—we skipped flat shelves entirely. Throwing a wire mesh back up there with solid slatwall hooks forces the inventory into neat lines. It stops stock from migrating and makes night-fill a whole lot faster for the crew.
Custom Fresh & Convenience Zones
To completely break up the standard steel aisles, we manufactured custom display units for the fresh zones.
The slushie and coffee setup is a huge foot-traffic driver. Rather than dropping machines on a generic metal bench, we built a dedicated counter system with cup dispensers recessed directly into the custom cabinetry. Wrapping that whole coffee unit in a timber-grain texture really warms up the space. We then pulled that identical slatted-wood look over to the adjacent bakery display, which instantly upgrades the whole aisle. Down in the fresh food section, we dropped in solid, stationary FV01 produce racks. Forget those flimsy wheeled units—you need dead-solid stability when you're piling up heavy fruit bins, and these stationary fixtures deliver exactly that.
The Front End: Custom POS Counters
The checkout area is the last impression a customer has of the store. Instead of generic counters, we designed a custom stainless-steel top POS counter system. We built angled shelving right into the customer-facing side of the stainless-steel registers. It is the perfect spot to cram in those last-minute impulse grabs—gum, batteries, mints—basically turning dead counter space into a solid cash driver before people walk out the door.
Mobile Floral Displays for Impulse Buys
Fresh flowers are massive profit drivers, but they need to be positioned strategically. Instead of static shelving, we supplied tiered, mobile floral display units sitting on heavy-duty lockable castors. The deep black buckets contrast perfectly with the timber-look base. Because they are on wheels, store staff can easily roll the entire display straight into the cool room at night, or reposition them during peak retail seasons.
The Result: Built Around How People Shop
The custom timber accents and warm zones successfully slow shoppers down in the high-margin fresh areas. Out in the main grocery runs, the steel gondolas do the heavy lifting so shoppers can grab their bulk items without a fuss.
Anybody can bolt some metal shelving together, but that won't give you a functioning supermarket. You need a floor plan that makes sense on the ground. If your shoppers are hanging around the fresh zones longer and your night crew isn't struggling to load the gondolas, the store is going to make money.
